Start Recruiting Your Team and Make a Big Flip at United Way Kick-off: Sept. 6

GRAND RAPIDS – Get out your favorite plaid flannel shirt; snap on those suspenders and join United Way of 1000 Lakes and the camp cooks from the Forest History Center for a family friendly Lumberjack Breakfast while supporting local programs and initiatives that are vital to our community.

The event, Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9 – 11 a.m. at Old Central School in downtown Grand Rapids, marks the official beginning of the 2014 campaign. The kick-off features two team challenges again this year – pancake cook-off and pancake flip relay. There is no fee to participate and all ages and abilities are welcome. Get your friends and co-workers together and sign-up for one or both competitions, visit www.unitedwayof1000lakes for registration information.

Starting at 9 a.m. cook-off teams will duel for the title of the finest flapjacks around. Celebrity judges, will rate aroma, presentation, taste, density and texture to determine the winners. The public will be invited to sample the team’s creations. Then at 10 a.m., relay teams will flip, walk, skip and run around Old Central School to show their competitive spirit as they battle for the annual Pancake Race title.

Enjoy a short stack of steamy pancakes and head toward the toppings bar to personalize those flapjacks with everything from chocolate chips to peanut butter. Then top it off with sausage links, a yogurt parfait, juice and coffee.

Cost is $6 per adult, $3 for those ages 6-12 and free for those 5 and younger. Pick-up and delivery are available. For event details, visit www.unitedWayof1000Lakes or call 218-999-7570.
