The northwoods has its own local news and information site. We are located in Marcell Minnesota 30 miles north of Grand Rapids Minnesota. We will also have items that we think will interest the people of the Bigfork, Effie and Talmoon areas. This includes not only news that happens locally, but also the surrounding communities like Deer River, Grand Rapids and others in Itasca County.
You can contribute to this site with items you think may interest the people who live here as well as visitors. We will include news or events from any of the surrounding communities. We do not have a large staff of reporters, so let us know about any news or events you are aware of.
We will do our best to verify the accuracy of anything we print. We do not want to print something that may be harmful to someone without verifying it first, so please include a way to contact you. If it's news, and it's true, we will print it.
We are located approximately 200 miles north of Minneapolis Minnesota and 100 miles northwest of Duluth Minnesota. We are located in Itasca County and The Chippewa National Forest.
We are also known as "The Edge of The Wilderness" due to our proximity to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, also called BWCA or BWCAW. While nothing can compete with a true Boundary Waters experience, once you've been here you will probably agree that in some ways, it's better here.
The north woods is a perfect spot for a vacation with over 1000 lakes in Itasca County alone. This area has fishing, swimming, hiking, boating and canoeing. Camping is available in either Scenic State Park or one of the U.S. Forest Service campgrounds, Clubhouse Lake and North Star Lake. Camping is also allowed in the Chippewa National Forest on National Forest land. There are lots of resorts for family vacations as well as RV Parks.
The night sky is unbelievable. Once you get away from the big cities and "light pollution", there are literally billions and billions of stars. You can actually see The Milky Way. There are planets and constellations, "shooting stars" and Northern Lights. There is wildlife here that you will only see a few places in the world. There are eagles, osprey, bear, moose and deer. There are wolves and coyotes as well as racoons, foxes and porcupines. You might even see the occasional skunk.
The Fall provides for several types of hunting, as well as beautiful Fall Color Tours that rival the colors of anywhere else in the world. In winter there are many miles of well maintained snowmobile trails. There are also cross country ski trails for those who enjoy the quiet that only the north woods can provide.
