Roe vs. Wade 01/24/05
Saturday was the thirty-second anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. What I really don't understand is why it continues to be so contentious after all this time. The two opposing forces must be very close in strength to keep this struggle alive for this long. I can understand why the Pro-Life groups aren't giving up, they believe an unborn Fetus is a human being. What I can't understand is why the Pro-Choice groups think it's so important. There are a lot of issues that fall into the same category, why don't they pursue them with the same fervor?
Let's look at what's at stake for both sides if the other side wins the battle. We as a society have decided to protect those who can't protect themselves, so I can see how the Pro-Life groups feel it's important- they are protecting an unborn human being. But what's at stake for the Pro-Choice groups? The right to choose is what's touted, but choose what? I don't understand what that means - especially for those who will never have to face that kind of a decision. We already have less freedom and have lost the right to make a lot of personal choices. Most of the losses are for a lot less worthy cause than the potential loss of another persons' life. There are countless issues that we as a society face, so why do the people who fight choose this battle over all the others? I really do want to know.
What if it was proven without a doubt that life begins at conception, would they feel the same? Do they know it doesn't and if so, how? Maybe it's time for all of us and The Supreme Court to take another look. If you are Pro-Choice will you please explain it to me? I just don't get it.
