I drove all the way to work the other day with the radio off. So, what's my point you may ask? The point is I am sick of hearing about terrorists and how we aren't letting them affect us. The truth is a lot of people are scared shitless. Now I've always been a student of human nature, and I thought I had a pretty good understanding of people, and not much surprises me. Well the last couple of months has even amazed me. I didn't realize just how dependent our society has become on its false sense of security. For as long as I can remember we have slowly been trading our freedom in for more security. There are more and more laws designed to keep us safe and protect us from ourselves. The reality some of us have had to deal with for a long time is that there really is no such thing as real security. There are no guarantees, we may think there is, we may wish there were, but the truth is there aren't any. So, have we become a nation of self centered cowards ruled by fear and motivated by indulgence? Probably not, but we need to face the fact we are hated by a lot of people who believe they have a good reason to hate us. We really aren't that bad, but we might want to take a look around and see why some countries hate us enough to want us to die. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we should do nothing to stop these evil people, nor am I even hinting that there is any justification for their horrendous deeds, but I doubt they think they are as evil as we think they are. As a matter of fact, I don't know of anybody who sees themself as pure evil. The reality of it is that both good and evil reside within all of us and we all choose which one rules us. It is a choice we have to be diligent about for our entire life, because the evil in others tends to bring out the evil in us - and vice versa. Fear is an evil, don't let it control you. The only real security you will find is in faith. The only evil you can control is your own.
